The End of an Institution

Teviot Middle Bar has its last night of normal business tonight.

It will then be open on Sundays only, for the quiz.

It will close forever on the Sunday of Freshers' week 2007.

(I believe those last two lines are correct. Please correct me if I am wrong.)

Really? Crumbs. I spent most of my time as a student there. What's happening to it?

well, i'm a bit out of the loop because i'm no longer a student myself, but I believe it is being turned into a study space.

Oh dear. Just googled it, and apparently it is indeed being turned into a "relaxed studying area", with the library being converted into a new "traditional style pub".

Hmm

I suspect I should pop along to Edinburgh again at some point & make use of my EUSA life membership & have a pint or two in the new place

What a shame for the library too :-( It was such a lovely old place.

That's so strange. It's (should be) a very successful bar!

Another sacrifice to the white elephant that is Potterrow? Ah, Teviot has never been the same since Fridays got demoted from first choice cheap booze venue to just some union bar where you can escape from the club-based throng of the other place. Shame, cos Teviot was ideal for mixing up club nights and a standard pub night. Bloody committee no doubt... :p

A comment above says that the library in Teviot is to be converted into a bar; I think that that'd just mean less stairs to climb, so not quite as much of a tragedy as it could've been.

Aye true, but will those busy Teviot Fridays ever be recaptured? I'd be very surprised!

We can but hope. Club culture seems to be killing everything else, it's a shame.

Probably not any time soon. Students seem much more interested in getting hammered in potterrow and dancing to cheese these days.

hmm, not quite - 2000 students a weekend in potterrow these days, nowhere near that many in Teviot. Potterrow does pretty well these days, Teviot ticks over but the quality of the bars surrounding it has improved massively in the last few years - look at Oddfellows; it was opened in direct competition to Teviot. It's not quite my cup of tea, but it's the sort of bar that's popular with students these days.

Aye, the landscape's changed I suppose. 'Tis a shame.

The real end of an institution was when the Chambers St union closed; kids today!

gosh! what was that like? Which building was it in?

My mum was in a girls halls of residence in the West End (just past St Stephen Street) where you shared a room and had to bring your own teatowel. We still have the one that her room mate (and later flatmate, when they moved to Marchmont Road and a proper flat) had brought with her in first year. She started 1971, I think.

It was the building on the corner where the steps go down to Guthrie Street. Had a funny layout inside, one smallish room upstairs and a few pin tables, and stairs down into the basement to the main bar area, which was pretty spacious. There must have been other bits, but it closed before I had chance to explore too much.

Ah freshers week in Chamber Street. I think I saw a hypnotist or magician there. I also remember it closing, something about the building being un safe and would need major money to make it safe.

The Teviot was the absolute business. Beer, crisps, arcade machines and snooker at rock-bottom prices. What else could you want? And the camber on the snooker tables added a real element of chance to the whole thing.

April 30 2007, 18:48:58 UTC 5 years ago

all of that's still there. just the bar's changed.

The snooker disappeared quite a while ago didn't it?
