Letting Agents [May. 31st, 2012|06:27 pm]

sidura
Hello,

Have a question, am thinking of moving and well always do the whole try and check out the letting agent thing.

Has anyone heard of Accommodate Edinburgh?

Looked on line and can only find one review which was awful but am not planning on writing them off on strength of one opinion.

Can anyone help?

I'm looking for Baby Bio (or any other kind of easily transported liquid plant food). My lovely husband tried at the B&Q on Easter Road, but it didn't have any. I work in Newington and am hoping to stop somewhere on my way home to pick some up. Anywhere around here have some? Does the Homebase on St Leonard's Street carry gardening and plant stuff still? I tried ringing them but no one picked up - guess they're busy!

Jubilee Bunny Picnic in the Park [May. 24th, 2012|09:55 pm]

paws_here
Hello Edinburgh folks! I'm Rachel from Paws Here small animal rescue (we care for and rehome rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small pets - there are a LOT of rabbits especially in rescue, more than you'd probably think!).

Just to let you know that after the success of our last event, we're holding a bunny themed Jubilee picnic in Braidburn Valley Park (just south of Morningside) on Saturday the 2nd of June from 12-3pm. It's going to be a lot of fun, with stalls and games, facepainting and fun, plus lots of cute rescue bunnies and guinea pigs to play with. You can even help us to feed them their special picnic lunch!

Our animals are very good with children, and this will be a very family friendly event - people of all ages are welcome! Bring a picnic and come meet the rescue pets.

Entry is free, and any money raised on the day will go directly to the shelter to help the homeless animals.

Thank you!

Hi All,

I'm coming up to Edinburgh in September for 2 days and need some assistance.

First: Can anyone reccommend a cheap, nice hostel to crash for two nights?
Second: What is the best way to get around the city and how much does it cost?
Third: What are the best things to experience in the city aside from the big tourist traps? I'm a huge fan of hole-in-the-wall type places.

If you have a couch i can crash on, i can exchange it for something really cool from Africa (art/music etc)

Recommendations for handyman-type folks? [Apr. 18th, 2012|03:20 pm]

Halloa!

I'm looking for recommendations of reliable and affordable handyman-type professionals. The sorts of things they'd be able to do well would be fitting kitchens, laying laminate and vinyl floorings (plus all the trimmings), fixing/replacing bath sealing, that kind of thing.

Our go-to guy is no longer available and we'd like to get quotes for some flooring, so I'd appreciate any help that could point us in the right direction :) Thanks!

I've always moved into existing flatshares before but now I'm looking into finding a flat with some others. Problem is I don't really understand the timescale I should be looking at. If it makes a difference none of us will be students anymore, we want to be reasonably central but aren't that specific on area. We want to move at the start of July.

When should we start looking? I could keep checking websites to see when flats for July start to turn up but it makes organisation for people not in town a bit of a pain. How far in advance should we expect everything to be signed and finalised?

thanks

Bikes [Apr. 13th, 2012|02:35 am]

I'm still riding around on a bike I got when I was in primary school. I can still get away with it but I'm pretty sure it's not quite as comfy as an adult bike would be. I'm on a very limited budget so I'd like to get a bit for my bike to fund the new one. Before I just use gumtree I was wondering if there were any shops I could go to? Even just to get a new (by which I mean second hand) bike since I'm quite small I find getting a comfortable bike tricky so it'd be easier in a shop but if anywhere buys too that'd be good.

I've heard the bike station is probably my best bet. But I've also heard that actually getting a bike involves turning up early and queuing- is that right?

Save Edinburgh Arts [Apr. 6th, 2012|05:18 pm]

[Current Mood |aggravatedmotivated]

Edinburgh's lost an awful lot of eclectic arts venues, outlets for artists and accessible events, in the last few years. Rather than stepping up to save any of these, or encourage such things in any way, Edinburgh Council seems to think it's a good idea to start demanding that many free events pay for entertainment licences (there is currently a public consultation going on, about this).

I'm alarmed by the way things are going, so even though I've moved out of Edinburgh for now, I started a Save Edinburgh Arts facebook page. That on its own isn't going to solve anything, but I'm hoping that it will help galvanise opinion and motivate action... feedback and suggestions welcome!

Public Entertainment Licence Changes [Mar. 27th, 2012|03:57 pm]

mindwanders
From 1st April 2012 licensing requirements for Public Entertainment events in Edinburgh changed. Previously there was no need to have a license for Public Entertainment events if the event was free but that changed as a result of an amendment to legislation.

However, the Regulatory Committee for the Council is waiving any fee for a licence for a free event scheduled to be held before 20 April 2012. The next Regulatory Committee meeting on that date will make a decision about future licenses and fees for free events taking into account the views of the public.

Changes to the Public Entertainment Resolution (a statement from the Council of its intentions and required by law) are required, to ensure certain small scale, free to enter public events do not require a licence.

This will mean that some events - such as art exhibitions, charitable functions and poetry readings - can go ahead without a licence or fee. The public are being asked their views on what kind of events should be exempt from having a license. The closing date for giving your views 13 April 2012.

Primary Schools [Mar. 13th, 2012|11:48 am]

Hello there!

We will be moving to Edinburgh in July and I am trying to match flat hunting grounds to primary school catchment areas.

As we are not big fans of owning a car we are looking at being as close to the city centre as possible.

In all the expat forums, everybody is going on about Stockbridge primary but I am not so keen on living in Stockbridge and the school seems to be fairly competitive to get into - I don´t really want to find myself among loads of career parents.

Does anybody have first hand experience with other centrally located primaries? I heard some good things about Royal Mile primary and The Royal High primary. Can anybody back that up?

What about Tollcross? Any other favourite schools? Any schools you would stay away from at all cost?

I am looking for a good standard and generally pleasant atmosphere; independant schools are out of question.

Thank you so much for your help!

Singers of all levels needed [Mar. 12th, 2012|06:19 pm]

actionreplay
Edited again: The council has postponed the changes pending public consultation, but the original organisers of the April 1st protests have asked that we all go ahead anyway. So the protest discussed below is indeed going to happen - I'm going to find out what's actually going on over the next 24 hours and will keep you updated.

---

As some of you know Edinburgh Council is planning to bring in measures to make anyone organising a small event in a public area (eg gallery opening, 2-person street theatre etc) apply for an expensive license in advance. Glasgow tried to bring this in a while back but dropped it as they realised they would kill the low-budget arts scene.

So... there is an initiative to have as many small arts events across Edinburgh on April 1st as a collective protest. I want to organise a choral (singing) event and need volunteers.

you do not need to be a good singer! )

Hello all :)
I found a bag on the 33 bus the other day and handed it to the driver..the contents consisted of lots of meds and a kindle (bit odd I know)
I filled out a little form with my details and phone number. Does anyone know the proceedure after I handed it in?
Is there a chance I can claim the kindle if it isnt collected after a certain amount of time (like the police)?
I was thinking of getting the kindle and selling it and giving the money to a charity..I'd rather have that happen than LB keep it, sell it, have it vanish etc.
Looked on their website but couldn't find anything about claiming handed in items?

What's happening on 19th March this year? [Jan. 15th, 2012|02:41 pm]

Does anyone know if anything important/any medium-to-big-sized events are happening in Edinburgh on or around 19th March? I have family wanting to visit then and they say a lot of hotels are booked out, and are thus asking if that means there's something happening and the city will be extra busy.

Google was my first port of call but I can't see anything from my first sweep (apart from a big rugby game on the 19th LAST year), and I figured someone here might be more clued up on general city happenings than I am.

I'll appreciate any help/info - including "nah, nothing happening that I know of". Thank you :)

Giveaway: scarlet velvet Elizabeth Arden kaftan (some damaged bits) [Jan. 8th, 2012|07:42 pm]

actionreplay
This is a scarlet velvet kaftan, UK sz 18 approx, not 100% sure of fibres but think silk pile with polyester backing. It has gold embroidery around the sleeves and neck, and the label says "Elizabeth Arden". I bought this at Repeat Performance, a posh charity shop on Fillmore St in San Francisco in 2006, so I have no reason to believe it's not genuine.

The cons - the moths got at it and have eaten the velvet pile back to the poly backing in a few places.

So, good for a goth club, a fancy dress costume, a pseudo-period outfit in low light etc etc but not for a black tie do. If you wanted to salvage the fabric for something else, bear in mind the moth damage is in a number of different places, I don't think you would get many pieces out of it.

Does anyone want this? Picture below. It's scarlet, not the dark red that the photo shows it as, as my phone camera isn't great. I'm giving this away as I haven't worn it in 4 years.

Oil heater repairs [Jan. 4th, 2012|12:31 pm]

[Current Mood |coldcold]

Hello all,

Our (small) office, from which we run a (tiny) arts organisation, has no official heating. We did lots of research, and invested in two portable, oil filled radiators, that run off electricity.

One of them has now gone kaput. We've tried a fuse change, with no success. I've Googled my ass off for places/people that might be able to repair it, but can only find a random person in Falkirk, who never answers his phone.

Does anyone have any recommendations for heating engineers/similar that they could point me towards? We're currently huddled around a single heater, and I'm loathe to send the other for recycling without trying to resurrect it.

Thanks,

Hi everyone! We have a baby changing unit / chest of drawers to give away to a good home.

It is in good condition considering it's served two children so far. The only issue is that the runners of the drawers lost their ball bearings, so you don't get a super-smooth opening/closing action. The only way to fix that is to replace the runners for all of the drawers, which we couldn't be bothered to do!

So, it's going free to a good home! It's solid pine as far as we know, with darkened steel fittings.
