Sri Lanka Currency Exchange in Edinburgh [Jan. 23rd, 2017|11:08 am]

Hello

Probably a long shot but I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere in Edinburgh where it is possible to change Sri Lankan (LKR) ruppees into GB pounds? Sri Lanka has a closed currency so it is rare to find anywhere in the UK where you can convert it... (though I believe still possible some places?)

I have recently returned from Sri Lanka and was hoping that I would be able to spend the rest of my rupees in the airport departure lounge or exchange it there (having been misinformed that this would be possible) - however many of the places in the departure lounge only took US dollars and there was nowhere to change money that I found. Anyone got any tips?

Alternatively are there any Sri Lankans on this list / anyone planning a visit to Sri Lanka who would be interested in exchanging the ruppees with me for GB pounds?

Thank you

New choir for parents and children [Jun. 6th, 2016|03:44 pm]
people of edinburgh

randomchris
Attention all parents in Edinburgh who like singing (at any level)!

I have actually managed to get it together and book a venue and time for trying out a parents-and-kids choir. The idea is basically that parents turn up, bring their kids, and we all sing in the same room while the kids play (hopefully not super loud).

I've booked the Harry Miller Hall at the Greyfriars Charteris centre (the old Kirk O'Field building on the Pleasance) from 2-4 on Sunday 3rd July and Sunday 17th July, to try out a couple of "taster sessions" - if these go well then we'll hopefully start it properly in September.

Hiring the hall does cost £50 for a 2-hour session, so I'll have to ask for a small financial contribution - would £5 per adult and £2 per child be acceptable? If that cost is a barrier to you, let me know and we can work something out.

If interested, please email me at hutchingsmusic@hotmail.com and let me know how many adults and children you'd like to bring (max 2 children per adult please, if you want to bring more children please supply an extra adult).

For more details, see public entry on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hutchingsmusic/posts/10153436261831370

80s or other types of clubs? [Sep. 15th, 2015|07:27 pm]

I've been in the habit of going to the Citrus Club's Planet Earth night for many years, but now they've stopped doing the free entry before 11 thing.
If I'm going to be paying for a club then I'd like to explore other options.

So, what clubs do you recommend?
Doesn't have to be 80s stuff. I like quite a wide range of things, but I do want to be able to dance lots.

Does anyone know of a barber in Edinburgh who will accept to give a gent's haircut to a woman?

My partner just wanted the back cutting short, nothing fancy, and my usual barber turned her away with mutterings about 'can't do that, sorry, wouldn't know how' (as if women's heads are shaped differently from men's...).

David Bann gift voucher [Jan. 9th, 2015|03:04 pm]

We were given a £50 gift voucher for David Bann for Christmas but sadly things like bills are more pressing than nice meals out at the moment - would anyone be interested in buying it for £40? I'd accept cash in person, or PayPal (I'll cover the cost of Signed For postage). It's beautifully presented so would make a nice gift:

Picture under hereCollapse )It is brand new and unused, and it has a serial number on the back so you can verify that if you're concerned. I'm not a scammer, I promise!

Waiting Job During Fringe and Beyond [Aug. 10th, 2014|01:23 pm]

Do you or somebody you know need a job right now? As in today/tomorrow?

A small bistro near the Royal Mile is looking for part time and full time waiting/bar staff.

I won't sugarcoat this - especially during Fringe it's very busy and physically demanding work with long hours. Some hospitality experience would be essential as they don't have time right now to train new staff all the way from scratch.

Tips are shared fairly (which is not as much of a given as it should be).

If you are interested, have carried a tray of drinks before and know how to get three plates from A to B without making the trip more than once, please PM me and I'll forward the manager's email address.

Thank you :)

Sprucing up a communal garden [Apr. 23rd, 2014|06:34 pm]
people of edinburgh

elettaria
About 100 flats share our communal garden, which right now is lots of gravel, some municipal-looking shrubbery which some neighbour has pruned to buggery, and a fair amount of rubbish. Does anyone have an idea how we could organise getting this done, so that I'm not a) shouldering the entire cost, and b) not finding that someone cuts down my efforts? The University of Edinburgh owns a fair number of the flats, half of my block for instance, but they tend to either completely ignore their responsibilities or go ahead and pay for everything.

I've seen a fair amount of articles/posts about which Edinburgh letting agents are the worst - does anyone have any idea of which are the least worst? I'm trying to research possibilities for letting my flat out, and as I've not using letting agents as a renter I don't know who to avoid. Any ideas? Although I'd be the person letting it, I'm interested in agencies that are good for the renters.

Posted for one of my friends [Feb. 16th, 2014|04:49 pm]

Does anybody know of an older person looking for a wee doggy companion? One of my friends has come to the very difficult decision to rehome her much loved little dog. Jodie is a 13 year old terrier and NEEDS someone who is home most of the day as she gets very upset when left. She'd be a perfect companion for an elderly person as she's very loving once she gets to know a person and bonds very strongly to her owners. I spend a few hours with her every Friday when her owners are out and she's a great wee dog, happy and energetic!

From her current owners:

"I am very sad to say that we have made the decision to rehome our wee doggy. When we got her she was 6kg over weight, untrained, a
aggressive, unsocialised and had bladder issues (all things that were undisclosed by the SSPCA). An older dog who has past that we are unsure of, means she has very very bad separation anxiety so we can't leave her alone without her howling or peeing or pooing all over the house. We kind of muddled along for the past year, spent a fortune on vet bills and and tried different things including an animal behavourist but the final straw was a neighbour complaining to the sspca about her howling. Funnily enough, they are who we got her from and when i called about all her issues their only suggestion is that they would PUT HER DOWN!! Certainly not what you would expect from an animal chairty who get a lot of public funding! Any way, they told me if i didn't want that i should put her on Gumtree!! Again, not what you'd expect from them (i immediately cancelled my monthly donation to the Sspca now that they are actively encouraging selling your dog to unvetted people on Gumtree!). The thing is we wanted to keep jodie until they found a home so's not to use up their resources and again they said they could not do this, that she would have to go back into kennels!

So this leaves me in a horrible position were we must try and vet possible new homes ourself. If anyone out there knows someone looking for a pooch and they are either retired or stays at home all the time or can take the dog with them wherever they go then please ask them to consider wee jodie. She is full of energy, fun and knows lots of tricks! She is a great wee dog who just can't handle being left alone for even short periods of time. We would give the new owners everything they need including beds, bowls, coats, collars etc. She can be a tad grumpy so she wouldn't be good for a home with young children.

Please share this if you can so we can try and find her the right home for her last few years."

Tattoos for the meek [Jan. 24th, 2014|09:24 pm]

After spending the best part of a decade thinking it over, I have decided to get a tattoo before I turn 40 in December.  A friend suggested this group might be able to help me find the right person.

I have an idea I have been working on, but no art skills whatsoever, so I am looking for either a tattoo artist who is good at transforming ideas into reality *or* someone who would be willing to turn my ideas into something a tattoo artist can work with - for which I am willing to pay.  In the latter case I'd also be after a recommendation for someone to actually do the tattoo.

What I'm wanting is a bluebell and a snowdrop in the shape of a heart.  I put together this Pinterest board of ideas a while back.

Mini whiteboards? [Oct. 9th, 2013|06:17 pm]

I'm in desperate need of a mini whiteboard and was wondering if anyone has seen them in any local shops recently. I've found some that are around A3 size but I really need a small one, closer to A5 or A4. It's to take to my mum who's in hospital and isn't able to speak at the moment, to help her communicate, and I don't want one that's too unwieldy (she has a notepad but I think a whiteboard would be more fun!).

Today I've tried Poundland, Ryman, Pound Savers, and Edinburgh Bargain Stores with no luck. I have time to try a couple of more places after work tomorrow and it'd be really helpful if I knew where will definitely have them, so if you've seen any lately please let me know! Thanks so much.

EDIT: I found one in WHSmith today, thanks so much to thereyougothen for the heads up!

Have had this on gumtree but thought I'd post here as well!

I have a whole load of art supplies from my timme at college that I'm looking to pass on to a better home.
A lot of the items are barely or completely unused, while some have some usage but not so that they're worthless.

Most of this came from bursary packs at college but have collected a lot of stuff over 4 years of portfolio courses!

This stuff would be ideal for someone doing higher/advanced higher and looking to move on to college or someone just interested in art!

I'll put the item info under a cut.
I'm happy to negotiate on price and can drop off in the Edinburgh area otherwise it would be collection!

Thanks guys, please pass on this link to anyone you think might be interested too :)

Anybody got any ideas on what to do about getting my daughter a replacement phone?
She's on an O2 contract, and got her phone through the O2 Shop in the St James' Centre.

The screen went blank and they claimed that this was an out of warranty repair, despite it being within the warranty period, so she had to pay £140 before they'd even look at it and was told that it would be either repaired or replaced in 3-5 working days.
It's now been seven working days since she handed over the money, and apparently the repair hasn't even been started.

She's off on holiday tomorrow, and while she has a basic loaner phone from them she's paying for Internet access on the contract which she can't use on the loaner phone.

Neither the repair centre nor the shop are offering anything more constructive than empty apologies.
And they're now saying it could be 28 days.

How do we take this further?

Any recommendations for B+Bs/hotels closeish to city centre, £50-60/night, and does a breakfast? [Jul. 28th, 2013|01:51 pm]
people of edinburgh

werejud
Hi folks,

My Mum is trying to visit for a few days in September. She normally visits in September (for my birthday), and usually stays in the same B+B. However, this year we've had to leave the booking a little bit late due to having to wait on dates of when I'm going into hospital, and now her usual B+B are fully booked.

So we're looking for alternative places she might stay. What we're looking for is something that costs £50-60/night (for a room with a private bathroom), serves breakfast, and isn't too far out of the city centre. She's looking to stay for 4 nights and the stay has to be early-mid September due to the aforementioned hospital stay for me later in the month.

We're searching around but Edinburgh has so many B+Bs and hotels that we're feeling a bit overwhelmed, so I thought I'd ask if anyone can give us some ideas.

If you know of any places that fit the criteria above, I'd be very grateful for your help!
